MLTC’s Governance:
The MLTC Executive is comprised of the nine Meadow Lake First Nations chiefs and the MLTC tribal leadership. Each of the nine chiefs has equal representation at the management level and jointly they control the overall direction of the tribal council. The tribal leadership, consisting of the tribal chief and the vice-chief work in partnership with the MLFNs chiefs as a collective decision-making group that oversees tribal council operations, policies, investments and political strategy.
The current Tribal Leadership was elected by majority vote of First Nation Chiefs and Councilors as follows:
Background: In the late 1980s following the failure of the 1982-87 Constitutional discussions, the Meadow Lake First Nations (MLFNs) and the Meadow Lake Tribal Council (MLTC) began preparing for negotiations with Canada and Saskatchewan to achieve restoration and recognition of the MLFN Governments. Both the MLFNs and MLTC continued to work towards constitutional renewal and change that reflected the MLFNs inherent right to self-government and create laws that included the wisdom of their Cree and Dene traditions, cultures and values.
